English resources

Reading Masters - 08.02.22 to 11.02.22

This week, we are focussing on a discursive essay. This text is called 'Should children play video games? This will support with understanding the structures of a discursive essay. The text and questions for the week can be found below. Please have a go at all of the questions and upload your work to Portfolio on Class Dojo.

Tuesday - Text Marking

Read through the text called 'Should children play video games?'. Think about these questions:

  • What type of text is this?
  • How do we know?
  • Key features of this genre? Why are they used? What do they do for the reader?
  • Why do you think the author has chosen to use these features?
  • What is the text about? Summarise it in 2 sentences.
  • Purpose of the text?
  • Intended audience?

Additionally, read through the text. Are there any words that you are unsure about? Can you find out the meaning of those words using a dictionary or the internet. Annotate or write down these words and their meanings in the context of the text.

Wednesday - Retrieval

Answer these retrieval questions from the text. Remember to look at the key words in the questions as these are vital for helping to find the answer in the text.

Thursday - Vocabulary

These questions will all be vocabulary based. Think about the using the rest of the sentences and the text to work out the meaning of the words.

Friday - Thinking Caps

These questions require you to either use APE or PEE. Remember to find evidence from the text to back up the point that you are making.

Grammar

Please click the link below to access a sequence of English Grammar lessons.

Spelling Bee

Look at the first three rows. We are learning the statutory spellings in our Spelling Bee Autumn Term 2 list. Use the spelling menu to practise your spellings in a range of ways.

Topic - I have a dream

This week, in our afternoon lessons, we will be covering: Science, PSHE and Music.

Science

In this lesson, we will be describing the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans with a focus on the heart. Look at the heart and think about what the function of different parts might be. Watch these videos and label the different parts of the heart. After this, write an information text about how the heart works. You may need to watch the videos more than once. Look at the instruction sheet about what you will need to include in your information text.

Art

We will be looking at the artist called Alberto Giacometti. Research his art work - what type of art does he produce? Can you give your opinion of his artwork? How do you think he makes his work?

Try creating your own sculpture in the style of Alberto Giacometti - can you link it to our 'I have a dream' topic?

Music

In this lesson, we will be learning a folk song to perform. This song is called 'Gospel Train'. Listen to the song here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmqaBTn1V0s. Learn the lyrics for the song and think about what patterns you notice with the music.

Can you make your own soundscape of a steam train to add to the beginning, between the verses and at the end of the song?
