Welcome to Reception!

We are Little Terns Class (Miss Lambert)

Welcome to Little Terns Class where every child embarks on their learning journey in an environment where knowledge is a wonderful adventure.

Together, we shine as we learn, we belong and we believe

What are we learning about?

Take a look at our Conflict Learning Organiser, created to support our children in their next term at school!

What have we learnt about?

In our previous theme: Culture, the children and our EYFS team really enjoyed our various learning moments and opportunities. Take a look at this video to see all the fantastic learning we did.

Our Facilities

We are very fortunate to have a fantastic learning space both indoors and outdoors.

Our large classroom space includes:

  • accessible toilets within the classroom, for the use of Reception children.
  • double doors open up to our own computer suite with 10 new computers and a newly stocked library featuring child friendly library shelves with a great selection of fiction and non-fiction books.
  • we have a boot room to store our coats, bags and wellies. Here, we have wet weather gear for every child.
  • we have an additional separate, quiet room for exploration and play.
  • our outdoor area opens up under a canopy where we can access an array of provision including a mud kitchen, sand pit, water tray, Maths and Writing Sheds, bikes and scooters, and much more!

Phonics and Reading

We follow Jolly Phonics where every phoneme has a picture, story, action and song to help embed our understanding and recall. Below is a link to the Jolly Phonics songs in the order that we teach the phonemes. Every sound is a phoneme. Some phonemes are made up of one letter, for example s, other phonemes have two letters, for example ai - which is the sound in tail -, these are called digraphs.

Reading is a priority in Reception class. Adults listen to every child read at least 2 times a week, often more. We also read daily during our phonics lessons, through our play and exploration. We have a vocabulary rich environment where books, stories and tales are our passion. We have a love of reading that we share and embed from day one.

Reading and sharing stories with your child, along with listening to your child read, is the most important part of your child's first few years at school. With every story they learn new vocabulary, learn about new plots, characters and settings, learn to problem solve and have a wonderful array of experiences all through imagination, creativity and the joy of stories. As your child learns a phoneme a day at school, it is vital they can use and apply this in their reading every day by sounding out the words in their Jolly Phonics reading book, then blending them together. You will be amazed at their progress.

In Reception we all have Reading Rambles where the same book will be read at home and in school. The Reading Ramble exercise book is where adults at home and school can write comments about the child’s reading. Comments may include things such as which words were challenging, any sounds that were difficult for the child, brief notes on the conversations had about the story or any predictions made.

We would like each book to be read three times before it is changed to help with confidence, fluency and comprehension skills.

Adults in school will set Reading Ramble Challenges based on the story to be completed by the children directly onto the pages in this Reading Ramble exercise book. The Ramble Challenges will be written in blue pen rather than purple so that they are easier to identify.

Please encourage your child to use neat handwriting and correct letter formation when writing in their Reading Ramble. Pencil or pen may be used, but not coloured pens or felt tips please.

Phonics in our classroom

During our phonics lessons, children are learning to write in books to develop their independence and practice those important handwriting and fine motor skills. They are writing words that include our previously learnt sounds.

Maths

In our reception class we provide daily mathematical opportunities. We follow and provide a wide curriculum that covers a range of mathematical skills and concepts throughout the year. The children receive a maths input daily where children learn through singing, manipulating materials and using technology to help their understanding. Our provision ensures that children have access to resources, where they can practice their new learning through play and explore.
