Computing

At Swaffham CofE Primary Academy, our vision is to inspire children, their families and our staff to SHINE, LEARN, BELIEVE and BELONG so our children achieve their very best, leaving us as confident, happy, resilient learners. Computing has become an indispensable part of everyday life that children become familiar with from an early age and will be fundamental in our children’s future. At Swaffham CofE Primary, we strive to support the development of skills such as being able to create digital media, to become curious about computer systems and how technology works, to be able to programme and code, encourage their enthusiasm to critique their work and make improvements, how to stay safe online and to confidently use technology by giving them access to try a range of practical tasks which allows them to experiment and empower them to think for themselves. Our curriculum has been created to develop these skills as they progress from Reception to Year 6.

We follow the National Curriculum for Computing alongside Dimensions which helps to link each computing topic to their current theme. In order to broaden their understanding, we have broken our curriculum into four categories: computing systems and networks; creating digital media; creating and collecting data and information and being confident in programming and coding. This will help support our children to learn computing skills to ensure that they become digitally literate, to have computational thinking and develop skills that they will build upon in each year group and allow them to leave in Year 6 as competent and confident learners. Our computing curriculum is built upon giving our children the opportunity to shine with their knowledge of computing whilst allowing them to explore through practical, problem solving activities. This provides them with the opportunity to believe in themselves to gain skills such as resilience and perseverance through being able to explain, analyse, reason, evaluate and create strategies to improve. Furthermore, the children will become inspired by the curriculum so they feel that they belong in the world around them; our modern society is built upon using technology to communicate and work. Moreover, it allows them the opportunity to work on essential skills such as: team work, clear communication and taking responsibility. The children will have access to a range of technology to support their computing learning such as using Beebots, ChromeBooks and Learn Pads. Additionally, they will have access to software such as Scratch to practise their programming and coding skills.
