A Celebration of RE

Key Stage 1

In Spring Term we looked at the enquiry question:

'What does the Cross mean to Christians?'

In Year 1 our pupils have explored symbolism in the world around us and the symbols of Christianity. We learnt about Lent and thought about things we could give up or acts of kindness during this time. Year 1s came up with some fantastic questions and insights around the Cross and what it means to be a Christian. Part of our discussion was:

Marcus, "But why is it a Cross?".

Alyssia-Rose, "Jesus died on the Cross and that makes me sad."

Arthur, "But I think I know why it is a Cross. I know what the Cross means to Christians. It means Jesus was the saviour of the whole entire world and Christians believe in Jesus."

In Summer Term Year 1s are exploring the enquiry question:

How did the universe come to be?

As part of our learning we have used our senses to discover the world around us and think about and discuss Creation. Alyssia-Rose asked, "If God created everything, then who created God?"

We created "calm and gentle" (Maja) music to accompany the blossoming of a Lotus flower as we learnt about the retold the Hindu story of Creation.

We then visited the Church along with our Reception class, Little Terns. Here we could explore and discover the pulpit, font, pews, stain glass windows and Bible. Reverend Janet and Reverend Tori showed us all around St Peter and St Paul's Church, our local Church in Swaffham. When in the Church, Fynley explained that, "When I stood on the pulpit I felt like I wanted to pray."

Key Stage 2

Year 3, Curlews Class, and Year 4, Hedgehogs Class, visited Norwich Cathedral on the 24th March 2022 to enhance their learning around Islam and compare features of the Cathedral to the Mosque. We had a wonderful day filled with curiosity, compassion and celebration.

"I really loved the stained glass windows and the organ was loud." Gabriel.

"It was nice when the lady lit the candles as it led us into prayer." Harry.

"A short walk from the Cathedral was the Mosque. Before entering we had to remove our shoes and the teachers had to cover their hair with a hijab. We heard some facts about Mecca and a gentleman answered some of our questions. My favourite part of the Mosque was the flooring because the design reminded me of a prayer mat." Rosie.

"It was lovely to take the children out on a trip and see them so engrossed in their learning." Mr Honeybone.
