Eco Warriors

The pupils at Swaffham Primary Academy are passionate about looking after our planet and being good stewards of God's creation.

Ofsted June 2023:

'Pupils have frequent opportunities to develop their learning and experiences beyond the classroom.  They have many opportunities to take on additional responsibilities.  These include as members of the school council and eco warriors.  Such experiences help to develop pupils' confidence and prepare them to be active citizens.'

The whole school community began to really consider what we could do as a school in September 2021 when we all returned after the summer break to our first curriculum theme of 'conservation' and our Collective Worship theme of 'hope' which just so happened to coincide with COP26.  In the Autumn Term of 2021, our pupils looked at 'how can we make a difference?'  Pupils learnt about different aspects of environmental concerns including climate change, energy production, deforestation, habitat destruction and water and air pollution.  Classes shared their findings with each other and made class videos of their ideas on what we can do individually, within our school and as a community to make a difference.  We put these videos together to make one SPA video and entered a competition being run by the Diocese of Norwich.  We were delighted to come second!

But, this competition result was not the end...

3 pupils wrote to Mrs Kaye about their desire to do more and start a pupil group within our school.

These pupils; Dougie, Charlotte and Rosie went on to create the Eco Warrior Group and inspired several other children to get involved.  We now have 17 Eco Warriors at Swaffham Primary Academy.

Our Eco Warriors meet regularly with our Site Team Manager, School Business Manager and Headteacher as part of making sure that pupils are fully involved in our aim to become a more sustainable school.

Our Eco Warriors were delighted that we achieved a £10 000 grant from Breckland Council to fit LED lights across our school. Here they are with Mr Edwards (Site Manager) Mrs Oxborough (School Business Manager), Mrs Kaye (Headteacher) and Councillor Ian Sherwood.
